1. Background

In 2020 Murang’a County experienced devastating floods that displaced families, destroyed homes, and disrupted livelihoods. Our project was designed to provide emergency relief and recovery support to the affected households. The intended focus was on:

  • Provision of food and basic household supplies.
  • Emergency shelter support.
  • Access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
  • Psycho-social support for affected families.

The project was registered on GlobalGiving to raise resources for timely response.

2. Planned Impact

The project sought to reach at least 1000 familieswho were most affected by the floods, especially households with children, elderly members, and persons with disabilities. Our overall intention was not only to provide relief items but also to support recovery and restore dignity for the displaced families.

3. Fundraising Outcome

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to promote the campaign, the project did not attract sufficient donor interest or financial contributions. As a result:

  • Very minimal funds were raised through the GlobalGiving platform.
  • The planned interventions could not be implemented.
  • The project had to be abandoned due to lack of resources.

4. Lessons Learned

From this experience, we drew several lessons:

  • Visibility matters: Donor engagement requires compelling storytelling and consistent communication about the urgency of the situation.
  • Competing needs: Global crises often mean that local emergencies receive less visibility unless well amplified.
  • Preparedness: Future campaigns will include stronger pre-launch awareness strategies, partnerships, and use of local/community voices to highlight the need.

5. Next Steps

Although this particular campaign was unsuccessful, our commitment to serving vulnerable communities remains strong. Moving forward, we will:

  • Strengthen our storytelling and communications to connect better with potential donors.
  • Build partnerships with local and international organizations to boost credibility and reach.
  • Continue exploring other funding opportunities to support disaster-affected families in Kenya.

6. Appreciation

We sincerely thank GlobalGiving for providing a platform where community-based organizations like ours can seek support. While this particular project did not secure funding, the process gave us invaluable insights into resource mobilization and donor engagement.

We remain committed to transparency and accountability in all our initiatives and will continue to share updates on future projects.
