Summary

The project will deliver the required support in terms of shelter, relief food, clean water and hygiene kits assistance to promote safe and healthy practices to the affected households from the heavy rains witnessed in the area and across Kenya. To date, about 1,000 families have been displaced and rendered homeless by floods across the county and at least 10 people have died in what is no doubt, the worst flooding in recent years.

Challenge

Kenya has been experiencing heavy rainfalls since the month March 2024. This floods and heavy rains have rendered some areas inaccessible due to damage on road infrastructure, damaged croplands, caused death of livestock and in extreme cases not only displaced populations but also caused death. In Murang'a County, villages have seen populations displaced by mudslides besides the heavy rains. About 1,000 households have been camping in schools and churches without food, water and clothes.

Solution

We seek to contribute to alleviating the problem by providing clean water, food, clothing and shelter ( reconstructing houses of families whose homes were destroyed) to 1,000 flood affected families . There is fear of outbreak of cholera and related water borne diseases with toilets submerged. Thus, the project will also offer basic medical care services and build toilets in public places and in schools as part of the strategy to address health and hygiene challenges in the affected villages.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, we seek to have the 1000 households get back on their feet by supporting them to start micro enterprises and provide seeds. AIRD will also link them to government to assess subsidised fertilisers and other support services. Besides, AiRD will also offer trainings on early disaster warning and responses to gain knowledge and skills to enhance resilience and preparedness. In some of the cases of families residing in mudslide prone areas, we will lobby the government to move them
