Dear Supporters,
Our project in Limpopo, South Africa, has seen a sudden and dramatic increase in rhino poaching, which has directly led to the horrific and bloody deaths of at least 5 white rhinos. The white rhinos are an integral part of the ecosystem, they help shape the landscape enabling the survival of a variety of different animal species.South Africa’s protected Private Reserves and National Parks are the last stronghold to the vast majority of the estimated 18,000 white rhino population, and they are now under increased levels of threat in South Africa which is home to nearly 80% of the world's white rhinos.
The economic stresses resulting from COVID-19 restrictions have placed enormous pressure upon both local people and the reserves trying to protect our rhino populations, and there is now a desperate need for funding to allow a continued presence and monitoring of the individual animals and herds to prevent further poaching.
We are working with partners to try and tackle the issue of poaching with a holistic approach, which includes supporting anti-poaching patrols, monitoring and surveys of the animals, and environmental education programs. We are extremely grateful for all the people that have already helped to maintain our presence at the reserve.
As we mark World Wildlife Day together, to celebrate and raise awareness of the crisis nature currently faces, the increased threat to white rhino in South Africa is yet another sad case study and reason to take action. With ever increasing numbers of endangered and extinct species, this event presents a further opportunity to create awareness of the current threats and to educate others on the importance of protecting our wildlife.
Thank you once again for your support so far, and together we will keep working to try and prevent further poaching incidents.
