2023 Animal Cruelty Legislation Achievements

By Melissa Devlin | Manager, Annual Donor Relations & Engagement

Hello,

Thank you so much for all your support of Humane Canada's Animal Cruelty Legislation project this past year.  As we enter the last month of the year, we reflect on the achievements for animal welfare in 2023. Your support has allowed us to engage with lawmakers, pushing for reforms that will safeguard animals from cruelty and neglect.  Your gift does make a difference and together in 2023 we achieved some incredible advancements for animals!

Because of donors like you, we have been instrumental in the passing and movement of some very important Bills in 2023 that will put an end to animal suffering. After years of dedicated frontline advocacy, we were finally rewarded with a victory with the passing of Bill C-47 a ban on cosmetic testing and trade. Bill S-5, the phasing out of toxic chemical testing on animals also passed, eventually ending suffering for millions of animals in labs. Our established relationships and experience in government relations has allowed us to further drive a ban to stop the live export of horses from Canada for meat consumption and hold the Government to their campaign promise to end the practice. We are watching Bill C-355 with optimism that it too will pass.

Our work didn’t stop there, Thanks to you we continue our efforts with the government to ban the captivity of elephants and great apes through Bill S-15 and were witnesses at the House of Commons in opposition to AG-GAG, a law that will stop the exposure of cruelty to farmed animals.

In September, a serial cat killer was given a 6.5 year sentence by a Calgary judge after she pled guilty to nine animal-abuse charges involving cruelty to nine felines, seven of which she killed. This is the harshest sentence given to a Canadian animal abuser on record. This result doubled the previous conviction history highlighting the continued importance of our Criminal Justice Reform Program and the cross-sector collaboration we facilitate, which was undoubtedly a factor in the outcome of this case.

We are proud of the incredible steps forward that were made this year for animals in Canada, but we know there is still a long way to go, and we will continue to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.  We are so grateful for your ongoing support to Humane Canada so we can continue to make postive, progressive change happen into 2024.

Thank you and wishing you a joyous holiday season ahead!
