Gardening as a family, team, and community

During the months of June and July we have been very fortunate to have more than 25 volunteers, both local and from Mexico City, contribute to the education, health and nutrition, and income generation project in Tultitlán!

First, on June 25th a group of Cisco employees in Mexico and volunteers from Tultitlán participated in a day of maintenence and improvements at the Tultitlán Community Center. The volunteers helped us move land from the soccer field to the community garden, paint a space for the community to make a mural, and plant tomato and cempasúchil (marigolds) in the community garden. These flowers are planted ever year in June so they are ready for the Day of the Dead festivities in early November!

Then, on July 11th, 2019, we had the privilege to recieve the visit of 4 interns from the new evaluation team of GlobalGiving in Mexico. This visit is part of the interns´ training as they embark on journeys to evaluate dozens of projects across Mexico, in Chiapas, Campeche, Oaxaca, Michoacán, Jalisco, Baja California Sur, Morelos, among other states.  During their visit we heard from Ana and Mari, two moms who participate in the garden projects. Both their children participate in the tutoring classes while they weed, water, and harvest in the garden, all with the support of Amextra´s Mariana. Now that summer break has begun, Mari´s kids will start working in the garden, too! She says they enjoy having a physical activity to keep their minds and bodies active in the summer months. Plus, they can take home some of what they grow! Today they left with tomato, zucchini, and beets! Yum!

We are so thankful to our volunteers, interns, staff and donors who make this project such an important part of the Tultitlán community. Thank you for reading our report!
