Tutoring and Backyard Gardens in Tutitlan

By Stephanie Ahlgrain | Manager of Fundraising and Strategic Alliances

During this period, the Amextra staff in Tultitlán continued providing tutoring in subjects such as mathematics and Spanish to children in the communities Sierra de Guadalupe, El Cerrito, y El Basurero. These classes, both for children that attend public school and those whose only school is Amextra, allow children to feel confident in their abilities to learn. Children are excited to come to Amextra and recieve special attention they often do not recieve anywhere else, due to overcrowded classrooms at school and parents who are absent due to having to work.

In addition to traditional school topics, workshops were held on Amextra´s "Formation of values for nonviolence" model, both at the Amextra Community Center and at local schools. This month, Amextra staff shared the workship with teachers and parents of children at Justo Sierra Elementary School and the José Vasconcelos kindergarten. This way, the teachers can replicate the non-violence education in their classrooms and parents are also familiar with what their kids are learning. Teaching teachers is a win-win situation!

Also during the first trimester of 2019 work has continued in the area of health and backyard gardens, where the community is encouraged to eat healthy and parents and children learn to plant vegetables and fruit trees. In addition, the activities in the community nutrition programs have continued, taking weight and height to the children of Tultitlán and monitoring them periodically to record their progress.

Finally, we´re preparing for our 2019 Mini Olympics event which will take place on April 27, 2019. This year the event will be even more special as we have spent the last year with a special focus on holistic health, and physical activitiy is an important part! Follow along with photos from the event on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/AmextraOficial and Instagram www.instagram.com/AmextraMex. Thank you, as always, for caring about the women, men and children in Tultitlán!
