American Diabetes Association - Oregon

On November 4, 2016, the American Diabetes Association of Oregon and SW Washington brought back the Annual Diabetes Practice Update (ADPU) for the first time since 2013. Hosted at the DoubleTree Hotel near downtown Portland, the conference brought together 207 physicians, nurses, dietitians, and diabetes educators from across the state of Oregon and Washington, over 30 representatives from our 19 community and corporate partners and more than 20 speakers, committee members and volunteers.

One of our core values at ADA is our commitment to setting the standards in diabetes care. At ADPU, our expert presenters led discussions about the issues which will help healthcare providers in our area improve the care they offer to people with diabetes in our community. The day included a wide range of topics, including motivational interviewing, nutrition and diabetes prevention. The highlight of the day was a presentation on the newest updates to the ADA’s Standards of Care, which are the definitive guidelines for diabetes care developed by a group of expert clinicians and researchers in the diabetes field. This important lecture helped us ensure that providers in our state have the absolute latest information and guidelines to provide excellent care to all of the members of our diabetes community.

The American Diabetes Association of Oregon, SW Washington and Southern Idaho have been hard at work expanding our resources for people in our community living with diabetes and prediabetes. This month, we’re featuring Wellness Lives Here, an initiative designed to inspire and fuel our nation's healthful habits at work and beyond.

The American Diabetes Association Wellness Lives Here resources helps companies, organizations and communities educate and motivate people to adopt healthful habits to reduce the impact of type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related illnesses. For some, it means fewer sick days and higher productivity. For others, it means looking and feeling better. For everyone, the result is empowerment—Americans who are better able to control, delay or Stop Diabetes and related health problems.

Companies participate in our three mission engagement days during the year: National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day; National Healthy Lunch Day and American Diabetes Alert Day. We also provide other resources design to help employees take ownership of their own health, including recipes for healthy living, our Living with Type 2 Diabetes Program, and many others.
