Diabetes is one of our greatest health challenges. Diagnosed diabetes has increased 350 percent in the last 30 years. Even more shocking is the fact that 1 in 3 Americans has prediabetes – and 90% don’t know that they have it. The statistics are staggering but the American Diabetes Association continues to grow our programs and our partnerships to take steps to fight for all Americans with diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association has long promoted the importance of healthy lifestyle choices to reduce the risk of diabetes. Our workplace wellness platform, Wellness Lives Here, harnesses the best of our wellness initiatives and years of experience and brings them directly to our constituents in their workplace. We work with employers to create a healthy office culture and empower employees to take charge of their health.
Since our last update, we held a Wellness Luncheon to celebrate American Diabetes Month and invited human resources professionals from many local businesses to join us to learn more about diabetes in the workplace and how they can keep their employees healthy. We will be hosting a second luncheon on March 14th so we can continue to reach even more individuals through our wellness platform.
In March, we will also be recognizing National Alert Day on March 28th and encouraging all of our members, volunteers, and corporate wellness partners to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test. By taking this test, you’ll learn if you are at risk for diabetes and how to take action to make healthy changes to reduce your chances of developing diabetes and all of its effects. Our Diabetes Risk Test is available on our website, www.diabetes.org, and you can print and share copies with your friends, family and coworkers.
