Summary

A FOREST OF PEACE is an initiative by Fundacao Lama Gangchen para a Cultura de Paz and Instituto A Nossa Jornada. The project will strengthen the HuniKui and Shanenawa INDIGENOUS ETHNIC GROUPS to guarantee their existence in the AMAZON RAINFOREST, which is being increasingly devastated. It will provide drinking water, food security, education and transport for 270 PEOPLE who were born and live in the forest. Indigenous people and territories are an important ecosystem for life on the planet.

Challenge

These native people, who live within their traditions in Sao Francisco and Nova Vida villages (Acre/Brazil) live in precarious conditions. They survive from few plantations vulnerable to the HEAVY RAINFALLS that affect the scarce crops every year. Scarcity of hunting due to ANIMAL EXTINCTION is a great challenge. Due to the Envira River POLLUTION, where the two villages are located, they live without DRINKING WATER, causing illness and death. There is no transport and no school for the children.

Solution

The following projects will give them better living conditions.DRINKING WATER: drilling of an artesian well.FOOD SECURITY: cassava flour mill and vegetable garden to support families and generate income.REPLANTING fruit trees and purchasing equipment for agriculture.EDUCATION: rebuilding the school for children. TRANSPORT: a MOTOR BOAT to transport them in the need of medical care and for them to sell their cassava flour production in the city. MAKING PEACE WITH: THE FOREST/THE ELEMENTS/NATURE

Long-Term Impact

These projects will directly affect their lives, giving them the opportunity for better income, a SUSTAINABLE and dignified future for future generations, as well as the PRESERVATION of their cultures, TRADITIONS, and the AMAZON rainforest in the area they inhabit. They are native people who have had to fight for their survival for many decades, and together we can help them to have a DIGNIFIED LIFE. We are the forest and we count on you.
