Through the tour we reveal the complexities - and thus the opportunities - that color the lives of the Palestinian and Jewish communities in Jaffa, and in mixed cities in general. Ignoring these complexities continues and strengthens their existence, whereas directly engaging with them is a necessary step in order to create opportunities for shared living. Sadaka-Reut provides tours in Arabic, Hebrew and English to students, educators, city officials, and others.
After May 2021, Sadaka-Reut was inundated with tour requests, so in 2022 we held a tour facilitation training program to empower locals to run tours themselves. The training created a space for a bi-national group participants to develop skills for joint bi-national work, practical facilitation tools, and knowledge they can share with their local Jaffan communities as well as communities outside of Jaffa. It included dialogue groups and historical analysis, practical facilitation experience, and lectures from local experts including residents, activists, academics, local politicians, educators, and social workers. The program ended with each participant leading a tour of their own, adapted to tell the city’s story but also their own story within it, having gained the knowledge and skills to allow them build a shared sense of responsibility towards one another to work towards a more equal and just society.
This program allowed us to greatly enhance the number of tours we were able to take part in. With your helo, over the course of the year we held 31 tours in 4 languages, including participating in 2 initiaves lead by local Jaffan activists, one to stand in solidarity with the hundreds of Jaffan Palestinian families that are facing eviction, and one to educate about the history of Jaffa through local stories of Palestinian residents. Overall, 623 people took part in our tours. Thank you for your support! Next year, we hope to continue and expand both our Tours Facilitation training program as well as the number of tours we give. What we have already accomplished and what we continue to accomplish has only been and will continue to be possible with your help.
