Sadaka-Reut seeks to expand our tours department, which facilitates socio-political historical tours of Jaffa. Our tours engage a variety of audiences in Israeli society to bring awareness to the city's erased history and current reality of injustice and propose an alternative vision of a truly just and shared society. We seek to train young Palestinian and Jewish residents of Jaffa to lead such tours of their city, and bring their own stories and histories into the forefront.
A great many tourists visit Jaffa, going on tours that perpetuate the city authorities' pattern of overlooking the city's Palestinian residents and history. Tour profits sidestep the local Jaffa community, despite the rampant marginalization of Jaffa's young people who have few positive prospects and face disproportionate police profiling. This unequal reality stems from the city's historical development, and its untold story, which Jaffa's own rarely get to tell and define for themselves.
By professionally training young Palestinians from Jaffa to lead tours on the history and reality of their city, and receive income for leading such tours, we directly counter the social trends that culturally and economically marginalize the local community, and Jaffa's young people. Further, all tour profits return to the community through Sadaka-Reut's activities in the city and with youth. Lastly, more tours will result in more audiences exposed to alternative understandings of the city.
Equipping young people in Jaffa with practical tools and a space to share their voice, enables them to invest in their community in turn, along with the circumventing of income to the hands of the Jaffa community. Further, our tours are an educational tool that enables audiences to understand the histories that have shaped current injustice in Israel. The more people are prompted to question common narratives, the closer we will be to creating an alternative just and shared future.
