Discriminatory policies in housing and education, police brutality, and eviction orders, make it nearly impossible for young Palestinians in Jaffa to build a future in their city, and resist the removal of their community. The mainstream story often told of Jaffa enables these trends of forced removal to continue. We seek to train Jaffa's young people, and those seeking to stand in solidarity with them, to lead alternative tours of the city and speak up.
With municipal support, growing interest by real-estate giants, far-right nationalists, and wealthy Jews has led to countless Palestinian families facing evictions, as counter-protests are violently suppressed by police. In this context, there are limited ways for Jaffa's youth to resist the policies shaping their reality. Young people in Jaffa rarely get to be the ones telling the story of the city, and Jaffa's often told story makes it easy for those benefiting from it to ignore the injustice.
By training Palestinian and Jewish young people as political tour facilitators, we first enable young Palestinians from Jaffa to re-claim their story, expose the city's erased history and oppressive current reality while advocating for their communities; and second, enable Jews living in and around the city to take responsibility and an active part in changing the narrative around Jaffa in their communities.
Equipping young people in Jaffa with practical tools and a space to share their voice, enables them to invest in their community in turn, along with the circumventing of income to the hands of the Jaffa community. Further, our tours are an educational tool that enables audiences to understand the histories that have shaped current injustice in Israel. The more people are prompted to question common narratives, the closer we will be to creating an alternative just and shared future.
