Our first Carbon Offsetting project will fund training in alternatives charcoal burning in the Shimoni forest. We will also fund reforestation and a forest scout initiative.
We recently met with Hassan, one of the guides of Friends of Shimoni Forest, our local partner in Shimoni. Hassan is a trained forest guide and took us through the depths of the forest, passing through coral rag surfaces and bushes, in order to learn more about the forest, the local culture and demonstrate the tourist tour they do for visitors.
The visit was absolutely amazing, we saw several species of hornbills, sykes monkeys and a lot of colobus monkeys. Hassan was able tell us al lot about the biology of the plants of the forest and their traditional uses. He also gave us a tour of kaya and some parts of the forests that were very new for us. We grew to understand why the tourists always return from these trips full of excitement.
Friends of Shimoni Forest is a CBO (Community Based Organization) based in Shimoni. It was founded as an initiative of the community, with the help of GVI. Their objective is to guarantee the conservation of this endangered forest, aiming to develop sustainable uses of this forest which is necessary for their livelihoods. One of their most successful projects was the creation of a forest tour, any funds raised by the initiative is re-invested back into the community with capacity building projects and scholarships for students.
Through working with partners like FSF we feel we can have most effect, empowering local people and working towards sustainable solutions.
