Challenge

Parent's at Bhongolethu are faced with the reality of unemployment in South Africa. Jobs are hard to come by, so parents often cannot pay their school fees, with the employment rate being 38.7% as of 2022. The minimum wage is R23 per hour, which is just $10.50 per day. All of the parents at Bhongolethu fall into this category. These parents are in survival mode constantly, so putting a meal on the table for their family is more important that paying school fees.

Solution

This program helps parents keep their child at Bhongolethu, where they receive quality education and it helps the child acquire the education they deserve. Why should only privileged children be allowed to have access to better education? "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," Nelson Mandela.

Long-Term Impact

The positive impact can be seen in our classes through the change of attitudes towards the environment these children live in. We hope to engage & excite as many students and teachers as possible to preserve their natural resources, ensuring survival for many generations to come. This project will empower the students & staff of these educational institutes with the resources, knowledge & language skills they need to protect and preserve our natural world & to achieve further education.
