Creating Opportunities for Indigenous Communities

By Staff | Wayuu Taya Foundation

Over the past few months, Wayuu Taya Foundation has continued supporting Indigenous communities in Venezuela through programs focused on water, health, education, agriculture, and music.

Throughout this period, we continued working alongside our communities to create opportunities for children, youth, and families across La Guajira.

WATER

Access to water remained one of Wayuu Taya Foundation's main priorities during this reporting period.

The Alto Arenoso community continued benefiting from the Foundation's water program, while we expanded our efforts to reach more Indigenous communities in the Mara Municipality.

Providing access to water continues to help improve the daily lives of children and families throughout the region.

HEALTH

The Health Program continued to support Indigenous and vulnerable communities by distributing donated medicines and medical supplies.

Working with our partners, we continue improving access to essential medicines and healthcare for families living in remote communities.

We also continue promoting good oral health by providing hygiene kits and educational activities for children and families.

During the first five months of 2026, these activities reached 66,017 people, including 64,601 children in schools and 1,416 adults.

A recent activity took place in the community of Alitasía in the Upper Guajira, where 70 children received toothbrushes and toothpaste. This activity helps encourage healthy habits from an early age.

AGRICULTURE

With the recent harvest of Moscatogiallo and Malvasia Istria grapes, the Agroecology Program continues to demonstrate the agricultural potential of the Mara Municipality.

The harvest is the result of months of work and care in the vineyard and reflects the Foundation's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable farming practices in the region.

MUSIC

Music education continued through the Núcleo Fundación Wayuu Taya, which provides musical training opportunities to more than 200 children and youth in Mara Municipality.

During this period, students participated in concerts, recitals, and special training activities. One of the highlights was their participation in the celebration of El Sistema's 51st anniversary, where they shared their progress through public performances.

Students also participated in Mother's Day concerts, viola and flute master classes, and collaborative activities with other El Sistema programs in Zulia State.

Another important event was the celebration of the International Day of the Cuatro, which brought together approximately 75 children and young musicians. The event celebrated one of Venezuela's most important traditional instruments and gave students another opportunity to perform for their community.

The Music Heals Program resumed classes in February 2026.

Following an audition process involving 32 applicants, 16 students were selected to begin formal instruction in keyboard, drums, and cuatro. Through weekly classes, the program helps children and youth develop musical skills, creativity, discipline, and self-confidence.

EDUCATION

On May 29, 2026, Wayuu Taya Foundation joined the XXI Anniversary celebration of Nerio Emiro Semprún Polanco National Basic School.

Students, teachers, and families came together to celebrate another year of learning and recognize the important role education plays in the community.

We are grateful for the continued support of Helping Those In Need and for the commitment of our partners, including ACESSO, Direct Relief, CORE Response, Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), the Giustra International Foundation, El Sistema, Music Heals International, and Colgate-Palmolive Venezuela, as well as our volunteers and community leaders.

Together, we continue to create opportunities and improve the lives of Indigenous children and families across La Guajira.

Thank You!
