Project Report | Jul 1, 2015
IsraAID PH Feb - June Activities

By Adva Vilchinski & Yael Or | Outgoing & incoming Philippines Country Directors

In 2015, IsraAID continues to support the rehabilitation of Leyte after Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). Activities continue to progress well, with projects now being implemented on 3 fronts:

  1. Mental Health and Psycho-Social Services
  2. Food Security and Agriculture
  3. Reconstruction

1. Mental Health and Psycho-Social Services

During the period Feb-June 2015, the IsraAID PH MHPSS team is proud to have successfully completed the second stage of training for municipal workers in Ormoc from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (DepEd), and Social Welfare (CSWD), as well as first responders.

The main topics covered included grief, domestic violence, chronic illness in the family, and conflict and trauma.

Participants were extremely grateful and appreciative for the training - below is a sample of the feedback received.

"I gained more knowledge and learned how to deal with different problems that I would encounter in the future. This adds a lot to my personal development."

"Yes, the topic is very useful and important. It will be beneficial to our clients to express themselves through acting or dramatization."

"The topic is very relevant as it deals with the personality of an individual. We needed to learn how to understand and deal with an individual is what we need in order for us to be pliant, open-minded as we deal with clients."

At the end of these final training courses, a graduation ceremony was held for all 89 participants.

In the coming months, IsraAID will be launching the third phase of the MHPSS program, continuing to emphasize the increasing leadership role of the graduates as IsraAID's international professionals take incremental steps back to empower local ownership and the long-term local sustainability of the program.

2. Food Security and Agriculture

During the period Feb-June, IsraAID's professional team on the ground has continued its practical training with farmers in the Cabintan area, as they prepare for the arrival and installation of new protective structures supported by IsraAID.

In addition, due to the extremely dry season that struck Leyte this year, IsraAID undertook to re-evaluate the area's water sources, and as a result made changes to the workplan and training for the farmers, emphasizing water management.

Even though the farmers are generally impressed by the yields achieved under drip irrigation, it takes time to incorporate these new agricultural practices to their traditional practices. This requires a long and patient process of trust building, sharing and learning. In the coming weeks, the team will continue to work with farmers on maximizing their yield using existing techniques, as well as new concepts supported by IsraAID.

3. Reconstruction

After a yearlong communication with the embassy of Japan in the Philippines, in March 2015, IsraAID signed a contract with the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, approving a grant of $90,753 for the purpose of constructing a proposed 2 story, 4 classrooms building, in Ipil national high school, Brgy. Ipil, Ormoc City, Leyte.

After receiving 3 quotations from 3 contractors, F. Montanes Construction were selected as the construction company for the project.

During June 2015, a designated Peso account was opened and required documents have been submitted to the GGP team.

As of today, IsraAID is waiting for the GGP team confirmation to start the construction work.
