IsraAID Philippines’ programs are running successfully thanks to your continued support!
Three years have passed since Typhoon Yolanda devastated large parts of the country and the recovery process is still on-going - frequently interrupted by minor and major new typhoons.
Food Security and Agriculture
Our Food Security and Agricultural Livelihood Program is holding diverse training sessions engaging farmers in all stages of the production chain - from planning to marketing. The training sessions are given by IsraAID Philippines’ agronomists to members of the Cabintan's Farmers' Association – CALCOA.
One important topic of the training is pests prevention and fertilization technics. Implementing those technics in the fields increase the quality and quantity of the vegetable production under protected structures.
Alvin is one of the veteran members of CALCOA and he has been part of IsraAID's program since the establishment. Alvin wished to apply the technics of pests prevention and fertilization on his own private sweet pepper field. Therefore, Alvin began to change his usual practices to the new that he had just learned in the training. The new techniques included modifying the crops fertilization frequency to a weekly assignment; using power-sprayer; and using plastic tray in seedling production. Thanks to his successful implementation, there has been a considerable improvement in Alvin's sweet pepper production as he was able to triple his gross income to 450,000.00 PHP using a field measure of only 0.40 hectare.
IsraAID Philippines agronomist who facilitated this success, continued to coach Alvin helping him to improve his practice even more. Moreover, Alvin's success motivated his fellow farmers to gain as much knowledge as possible from IsraAID's experts and encourage them to implement the new practices in their private fields as well.
Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support
The Mental Health and Psycho-Social program’s institutionalization is carried out in collaboration with Ormoc’s Department of Education during the current school year. Institutionalization means that the program is integrating psycho-social activities to the education system of the public schools in Ormoc, who suffered greatly from a devastating typhoon 3 years ago.
The program aims to raise awareness among students and their teachers of trauma and how to handle it, through providing tools and services using expressive arts therapy and the power and the dynamics of the class as a group. The activities are being integrated through the Values Education curriculum while all counselors and teachers in the city of Ormoc receives training given by IsraAID staff and core team facilitators. Altogether, classes from the 5th grade to 10th grade in more than 50 selected public schools in Ormoc City are co-facilitated by representatives who went through a training process by one of IsraAID’s therapists.
IsraAID's vision is to expand and to institutionalize more psycho-social support in municipal departments of education in other areas in the Philippines by integrating expressive arts psychosocial support activities to public school system curriculums.
Inauguration Ceremony
Last but not least, IsraAID Philippines is happy to announce that the opening ceremony of Ipil National High School was held on January 31st. The school was severely damaged by typhoon Yolanda, many of the school facilities and class rooms were completely or partly demolished. IsraAID Philippines partnered with the Japanese Embassy to build a new two floor building and the inauguration ceremony was held this week, introducing a new chapter for the children of Ormoc.
Thank you for being a part of IsraAID Philippines!
