Fundacion Comunitaria Oaxaca will collaborate, through its RedComun program, directly with the communities, grassroots organizations, local authorities, and civil society organizations to, in the first stage, provide the necessary inputs to cover the basic needs of food, shelter, and health of its inhabitants, after the damage caused by Hurricane Agatha. RedComun will promote the recovery of affected communities, focusing on local development and strengthening community resilience.
In the last days of the month of May of this year, Hurricane Agatha touched the coast of Oaxaca with strong gusts of wind and large amounts of rain, causing damage to human lives and considerable material damage, isolated communities, closed roads, lack of electricity and telephony. As of June 2, 25 municipalities in the regions of the Coast, Sierra Sur and Isthmus of Oaxaca have been declared a disaster area by the federal government.
RedComun is the program that Fundacion Comunitaria Oaxaca has designed to attend to emergencies and favor the recovery of affected communities, focusing on local development and strengthening community resilience. To attend efficiently and expeditiously, RedComun contemplates 3 stages in the short, medium, and long term. After what happened in the regions of the Coast, Sierra Sur, and Isthmus, we will begin with the implementation of the first stage: Communities of Solidarity.
Knowing that the recovery processes in the face of such effects are far-reaching, RedComun contemplates accompaniment in other areas in the medium and long term, such as the promotion of resilience; the reactivation of the local and solidarity economy, and community strengthening.
