The Pumwani mentorship Program was initiated in August 2011, Five (5) youth from the Somali community were extensively trained on Boxing and among the five (5) one was successful and even participated in the boxing competition in Kenya where he won both intermediate belt and Novice belt accordingly. These was a great achievement for the beyond boxing organization and special thanks to our Chairman Geofferey Munika who trained these youths on a powerful skill. The other youth are undergoing the training and with time they will also play become positive agents of change just like our chairman and they will also change their lives of many youths. However, since inception our group helped several youth through member and the Chairman’s contribution and these was really practical and powerful but with support from donor community our program will impact the lives of many disadvantage and marginalize youth languishing in poverty and engaged in criminal activities.
We also have after kids program where we mentor them after classes and off late we received a lot of requests from the informal settlements in Nairobi especially parents calling our team once in a while for assistance but due to our financial position and capacity we could not consider their requests and therefore sought the help of the Global Giving and other individual philanthropic organizations and individuals to help our group so that we train more children and youth. The chairman also trained a lady Ms. Fartun Ahmed from the Somali community on boxing and self defense. These shows that our group consider girls as active participants and also have equal share with the boys and can also contribute to the success of their communities.
The beyond boxing is also a member organization of the Eastleigh Youth Consortium a network of grassroots youth groups and initiatives based in Eastleigh with membership drawn from mainly the diversity of the Somali community. The Consortium boasts of extensive and intimate understanding of Eastleigh especially on youth matters. The Consortium also enjoys community goodwill as demonstrated by their positive relations with religious leaders, Political leaders, community elders, Business community, Political leadership, Eastleigh Non-Somali community among others. This social capital equips us to realize a comprehensive youth empowerment and engagement program that creatively and innovatively seek to mobilise, organise, capacity build but most important inclusively and in a participatory form positively engage youth. The beyond boxing will engage both technical as well as social strategies in a process based methodology to ensure it not only addresses conventional developmental challenges but also addresses sensitive and emotive issues in the community and we share success stories and best practices with other youth.
The beyond boxing will create synergies with all likeminded organizations, donors, corporate sector and address most pressing issues with our fellow youth organizations. Since the start of our group we have not received any funds from donor community but our group managed to empower youth in our small way and we hope with support our group can perform extremely well even with a little budget.
