Lebogang, a 15-year old confident and strong young women, lives with her two brothers and unemployed grandparents on the dusty streets of Orange Farm Township (low-income community area) of South Africa. She joined Afrika Tikkun’s Child Youth and Development Program when she was only 11 years old. Since then, Lebogang has worked hard to become a leader in her community.
Along with her studies, Lebogang has been involved in Afrika Tikkun’s Young Urban Women Program, that empowers and mobilizes young girls to take action against gender based violence and women’s rights violation. At a very young age, with the help of Afrika Tikkun’s facilitators, Lebogang has emerged as a human rights advocate in her community. She has led group debates and dialogues on issues of sexual reproductive health and gender based violence.
She is now in grade 10 and is the chairperson of the Student Representative Council at her school and a Peer Educator. She recently represented Afrika Tikkun in the dialogue that was hosted by LoveLife (a youth focused HIV/AIDS prevention initiative in South Africa), addressing the issues faced by young vulnerable women in disadvantaged communities. In addition to becoming an agent of positive change in her community, Lebogang wants to study medicine and become an ophthalmologist. At an early age she had an eye surgery and is thankful to those who helped her. She now wants to help others obtain sight too.
