Summary

25 Nicaraguan girls w/disAbilities & their moms are walking in each other's shoes: growing together in health, recreation, education, & awareness of abuse & violence. Magic Shoes are affirmation groups of moms & girls building communities, giving space for girls & moms to get to know each other. So often, girls, w/disAbilities receive less attention in a family, invisible, even to her mom except for her disability. The cycle of violence can be broken by aware moms & girls together.

Challenge

25 Nicaraguan girls w/disAbilities & their moms are walking in each other's shoes: growing together in health, recreation, education, & awareness of abuse & violence. Magic Shoes are affirmation groups of moms & girls building communities and giving space for girls & moms to get to know each other. So often, a girl w/disAbilities receives less family attention. She is invisible, even to her mom, except for her disAbility. The cycle of violence can be broken by aware moms & girls together.

Solution

Magic Shoes' Affirmation Groups help moms & their girls w/disAbility walk in each other's shoes with other moms & girls. They are informed about health, education, recreation & awareness of violence & abuse. Once the girls' & moms' needs become visible, they work with others to meet them. They are giving them space together to build their mom-girl relationship. Taking the opportunities & risks to change together with the community of other moms & girls can stop the cycle of violence.

Long-Term Impact

Twenty-five moms with twenty-five girls w/ disabilities have more opportunities to grow. Walking in each other's shoes, they become aware of their needs. Thus the solid mother-daughter relationship makes the community grow, and this affirms the moms & girls. Once society is aware of their presence & gifts, they can work on their lack of resources. No one can deny a mother's strength as she works for her girl's visibility & equality.
