Support primarily indigenous Mayan mothers learn to read, write, and understand basic mathematics. From early 2025, your donation will enable us to continue offering our successful certified Level 1 and Level 2 courses while introducing a new, certified Level 3 course. CasaSito Association works in the region of Alta Verapaz where there are high levels of poverty, illiteracy, and inequalities. This program is available to parents and relatives of CasaSito's scholarship students.
In Guatemala, using a fingerprint remains a relatively common way to sign formal documents. The country has high rates of illiteracy, especially amongst people over 15 years of age who live in rural areas. This situation limits their ability to advance, understand their rights, and actively participate in society. CasaSito's literacy courses are offered in Alta Verapaz, a region with the second highest illiteracy rates (29.37%).
In 2023, CasaSito ran a pilot project for adults in collaboration with CONALFA, the national literacy committee. Five mothers of our scholarship students participated with great results. We expanded the program in 2024 offering certified level 1 and level 2 courses. Participating mothers have expressed a desire to continue learning and progress to the next level. From early 2025, CasaSito will offer a certified level 3 course.
Participating adults will advance their literacy and mathematical skills, receiving certificates upon course completion. Education brings greater job opportunities, improved family finances, and a better understanding of their civil rights. It is also a tool for their personal development. This is an empowering program that increases independence and enables participants to have more choice and control over their own lives.
