August is a very special month in Mexico, as we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on the 28th. At Banco de Alimentos de Hermosillo, we turn this celebration into action through our “Apadrina un Abuelito” ("Sponsor a Grandparent") campaign, inviting more people to join us as sponsors on GlobalGiving.
Currently, we support 382 seniors through our Ayuda de Corazón ("Help from the Heart") program. They face high vulnerability: many live alone, contend with disabilities, can no longer work, and suffer from food insecurity. For them, the free weekly food they receive is much more than nutrition; it is a reminder that they have not been forgotten.
Thanks to the generous donations received on GlobalGiving, we have successfully provided continuous monthly sponsorship to 15 seniors this year, ensuring they receive steady and reliable access to food.
One of our beneficiaries is Don Isidro Solís. Following the passing of his wife, he lives alone and faces significant health challenges, including asthma and the loss of sight in one eye. Despite his circumstances, he continues to work in a supermarket parking lot helping drivers park—a role known in Mexico as a "viene viene."
For Don Isidro, receiving weekly food assistance brings deep relief. It lifts a heavy burden regarding a basic need and gives him the peace of mind that comes from knowing a community network stands behind him.
In Hermosillo, there are around 15,000 vulnerable seniors. Today, Banco de Alimentos de Hermosillo reaches approximately 6,000 through various programs. Our greatest hope, and our biggest challenge, is to reach the 9,000 people who still need us.
We will continue seeking new sponsors so that no one is left behind. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Ayuda de Corazón. Your support transforms into food, dignity, and a tangible expression of love and companionship for our seniors.
