This project is designed to empower an inner city young lady to complete her last year of college by providing financial support for tuition, books, supplies, and food. By investing in a student's education, we promote gender equality, reduce poverty, and encourage the student to become a self-reliant leader. Ultimately, adopting a student would enable the student to become a positive role model in her community and make an impact on other young girls.
Pursuing a college education as an inner city Black girl from Detroit has it's challenges. Economic, cultural, and systematic factors often deprive youth from impoverished households opportunities to attend college. Only 53% of Detroit girls graduate from high school and attend college as freshmen. Only 17% of Detroit youth ages 25-34 attain a bachelor's degree, half the national average of 35%. Of that, Black students obtaining a bachelor's degree is only 12% while White students are 22%.
This project provides financial support to assist the student, thus relieving the stress of worrying about being able to to complete her last year of college and obtain her degree. Eliminating stress enables the student to perform at a higher academic level and complete her college education. By performing at a higher academic level, she would graduate with the necessary tools to become a future leader and a valuable contributor to her community and to society.
This project will allow the transformation of an inner city girl from hopelessness to hope, from being dependent to being self-sufficient, from being powerless to being empowered. Educated Black women are more likely to have more confidence, get better paying jobs, have higher incomes, support themselves and their family, and make positive impacts on society. Educated Black women often become successful business owners, influential leaders, and effective role models for young inner city girls.
