Coral Restoration August to October 2014 Report

- During this period (August to October 2014), a total of US$870.18 were received via the GlobalGiving website from eleven donors, one of them recurring many thanks for the continued support, and special thanks to recurring donors (thank you Laura). All your donations and giving this coral species a chance.
- Two monitoring trip was conducted to las Galeras and Palmar de Ocoa nurseries to check on the conditions of coral fragments collected so far. Most of coral colonies there are doing great, growing very fast, which enable us to create more new colonies.
- A new coral nursery was installed in the town of Montecristi, NW Dominican Republic. In collaboration of Galleon Divers, which are doing great conservation and awareness work locally, aside from exploring the many ancient wrecks found in that area, very cool stuf. All three types of nurseries were installed here, to better estimate the best one in the near future and concentrate on that given local conditions for faster coral growth. Also, a talk was given to more that 150 high school student at San Miguel Public School there, they were very excited to have a coral nursery nearby which they can use for school projects, and to restore that coral species in the future.
- More concrete coral nurseries were installed in La Caleta Marine Park in collaboration with ERM foundation from Germany. By now, all experimental phase of these structures is complete, and we can move on to using these to protect beaches from erosion, while also creating new snorkeling experiences nearshore.
- At the office, we have been working hard to build a new website for our adopt-a-coral program (adoptauncoralrd.org), we plan to offer coral adoption as a Christmas present in the upcoming holidays, share that link to all your contacts!

- During this period (M ay to July 2014), a total of US$265 were received via the Global Giving website from eight donors, one of them recurring many thanks for the continued support, and special thanks to recurring donors (thank you Laura). All your donations and giving this coral species a chance.
- One monitoring trip was conducted in las Galeras nursery to check on the conditions of coral fragments collected so far. Most of coral colonies there are doing great, growing very fast, which enable us to create more new colonies.
- One monitoring trip was conducted in Juancho nursery to check on the conditions of coral fragments collected so far. Most of coral colonies there are doing great, growing very fast, which enable us to create more new colonies. During this trip, we started coordinating the construction of a new coral nursery for A. palmatta corals, and making the arrangements to do a workshop for community members about coral reef conservation and coral nursery techniques, so they can use the existing nursery as a tool to attract visitors to the area and show them what the community is doing to conserve corals.
- A new donor will be supporting the Juancho coral nursery, they are EGE Haina, a electricity generating company, that established the first wind mills in the Cocos-Juancho area, making them a model to create energy on a large scale using the wind.
- A new coral nursery was established in Bayahibe, in coordination with Coral Point Divers. This one was made out of rope given previous growth rates success in that same area from existing coral nurseries managed by FUNDEMAR.

- During this period (November 2013 to January 2014), a total of US$335 were received via the Global Giving website from seven donor, many thanks for the continued support, and special thanks to recurring donors. All your donations and giving this coral species a chance.
- One monitoring trip was conducted in La Caleta Marine Park nursery to check on the conditions of coral fragments collected so far. Most of coral colonies in la Caleta coral nursery are doing great, growing very fast, which enable us to create more new colonies.
- During that trip, a new cement structure was placed near the other coral nurseries, expanding even more, and experimenting with this new tool that could be used to help reduce beach erosion and to restore damaged reefs. This work is being done with the collaboration of ERM from Germany.
- Coral fragments transplanted to the natural reef are doing good, there is some mortality related to algae growth near the base of the colonies, but the tips are growing away from the bottom and algae, they will soon be becoming part of a healthy reef in La Caleta Marine Park.
