Chimpanzee Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare and conservation of chimpanzees in Uganda. The Trust manages Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary which is home to 54 rescued chimpanzees. These chimpanzees are cared for through feeding, providing veterinary care and good husbandry. A dedicated team of caregivers is always available to make sure that the chimps are fine.

The chimpanzee adoption program is a fundraising program to support the operations of the sanctuary. Donors adopt a chimpanzee of choice for a small monthly fee of USD 50 to USD 100.

The funds donated have helped to meet the costs of feeding the chimpanzees, enrichment and providing veterinary care.

Over the last three months, funds collected from the program have supported the follwoin;

Feeding of chimpanzee

The 54 chimpanzees are fed four times a day at 8:00am, 11:00am, 2:30pm and 6:00 pm on a carefully sorted and balanced diet. Dry rations, including Maize (corn), Millet and Soy flours, Red beans, and Soy seed, along with fresh vegetables and fruits, are delivered every 10 days from the mainland by a motorized canoe boat.

Veterinary care

Chimpanzees are very active and strong, they display, charge and fight to solve issues and show hierarchy. These fights at times lead to minor and major injuries that have to be attended to. In the last quarter we have managed to successfully handle over 20 minor superficial and slightly deeper wounds, including one chimp having a sprain.

All the elderly chimpanzees over 30 years have been given monthly multivitamin supplements as determined by the resident veterinarian from the previous health check. This serves as a complementary immune booster against diseases.

The entire chimpanzee family and staff at the sanctuary were dewormed as per the quarterly schedule.
