Glocal Roots' Hub is the only place on Kos where refugees can access a safe space & basic support. Through our Free Shop, we provide clothing, food, and hygiene items to over 1800 people every month. Our community center is a place where people can spend time in a safe, clean space while connecting with others. We also aim to provide assistance to obtain the resources and skills needed to integrate into Greek society, in particular through a job placement programme.
In recent months, the number of refugees arriving on Kos has drastically increased. Individuals find themselves residing in an overcrowded, enclosed camp where they face a shortage of essential items. They remain in a limbo until their asylum applications are processed, after which they are compelled to leave the camp. Without the ability to seek employment while awaiting for their documents, many grapple with the challenge of securing accommodation and frequently face homelessness.
Our solution is to provide a safe, clean space where people can go every day to feel a sense of community and access the support networks that are particularly important for inclusion. Once a month, everyone can get clothes, food and hygiene items from our free shop. The Hub is also a place where we support refugees with administrative requests and where we organize language classes and workshops to help people develop the skills they need to integrate in the local society.
The project provides support to over 1800 refugees a month who need basic services. We also work to accompany people to obtain the resources and skills they need to integrate into Greek society and become self-reliant. Our community center is an essential place in Kos where people can find the support networks they need as they take their first steps in Greece.
