It's been a very productive few months at Kristina Health Clinic. We've increased the size of the staff, in order to provide improved services for childbirth and young families. In addition, we're offering improved immunization services (as pictured below). The need for our ambulance services is increasing as word gets out that it's available to transport patients to our clinic, or to the hospital in Lira (40km away) for more serious situations.
Julius Achon is traveling to the US this week to promote a new book, The Boy Who Runs, written by John Brant and published by Random House. This book will help bring awareness to the serious situation in Northern Uganda, and to Julius' incredible story.

A successful trip, and enhanced services

Several members of our Board and Operating Team traveled to the village of Awake in Northern Uganda. The goals of the trip was to review the recently installed water collection and plumbing system, review clinic operations, and build a chicken shelter. They also assessed the need for a facility maintenance program, and a fence to surround the property and improve security.
We are working to enhance our HIV diagnosis and treatment services. In addition, we are planning to expand our staff in order to offer enhanced birth and infant health services. These are much needed services, given the very high birth rate in Northern Uganda.
Also on this trip, the US-based team had the opportunity to bring musicians to perform at the clinic. This enabled the team to both promote the clinic and its services, and also build relations between the Americans and Ugandans.
Patient count is up, and we're improving the health of the surrounding area. Thank you for all of your help in making this possible.

Increasing patient traffic following events

Each November, we host a track meet in the village of Awake. We work with our founder, Julius Achon, and local youth organizers to produce an event that promotes health, community and sport in the Otuke District. It's the only event of its kind in the region, and the local community now treats it like a holiday.
Last November, we hosted our biggest event ever. Over 2,500 people attended, with well over 1,500 children competing in the run. There's a cost to hosting the event. However, the benefit is that we see a sharp increase in patient visits in the months after. The event has become one of our most effective marketing and communication tools. We've seen a 20% increase in patient visits in the past two months. This allows us to treat more local people who are suffering from malaria, AIDS, intestinal illnesses, and more. While all patients pay for care, their payments do not cover the full cost. We need the help of our supporters to ensure that we can provide high quality care to all in need, regardless of their ability to pay.
