Access to Knowledge through Computer Education

Computer literacy is essential and indispensible for any literate human being in the present era and so, computer education has been incorporated in the school syllabus for the students along with their usual course curriculum. This scenario is commonly seen in the schools of cities and towns but this opportunity is a distance dream for the students of the schools like Kisholaya Shisu Siksha Niketan (KSSN) of Sabuj Sangha at Nandakumarpur village of Sundarban region.  It has been experienced that; a student of urban school is far ahead of the student of a rural school in terms of computer knowledge and technologies, despite having similar standard of education. Sabuj Sangha realized the situation, felt the essential need of the students and established one Computer Literacy Centre under Access to Knowledge programme in KSSN for the children of its model school.

Presently, more than 100 children of class III to VIII of KSSN are getting the opportunity of basic computer education through its Computer Literacy Centre. The students have been divided into two groups, Junior and Senior based on their age and class’s i.e. junior group with the students of class III to V and the senior group from VI to VIII. The subjects taught are; comparison between a mobile phone and computer, the components & parts of computer, its functions, keeping machine on & shutting down, mouse operation, colour concept, drawing & painting etc. The students of VI to VIII are provided further knowledge on MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Note pad, how to save & delete a file and Google search for finding information. In addition they have been taught how to open Google Gmail account and are now familiar with sending mail to each other. The children of Computer Literacy Centre are found highly interested and enthusiastic as first time they were getting this opportunity. 

Rajnath , 11 year’s old reading in class VI is a resident of Nandakumarpur village of Sundarban is exceptionally interested for computer education. His father Mr. Sibabrata  works in non-formal sector and is very much aware about the quality education of KSSN and this computer education centre and admitted his son in this school. Rajnath started learning computer since class III and never absent from the school and computer classes unless he falls sick. He can assist his peers those who are little slow learners through sharing his gained knowledge to them.  He is interested in computer games also drawing and wants to be an artist.

Soumyajit , 10 years old reading in class IV is a student of Residential Child labour school. His father Mr. Asit Kumar resides with his wife in Dakshin Kalamdan village of Purba Midnapore district of West Bengal is a daily wage earner. He never gets job throughout the year and so, economic condition of Soumyajit’s father is extremely poor. He can’t maintain his family due to this situation and sent his son to residential school of Sabuj Sangha at Nandakumarpur. Soumyajit is getting education along with all residential facilities here and his father could never think that, soumyajit will get opportunity for computer education. Soumyajit is a good learner, sharp and intelligent to adopt computer education also performing well in his study
