Access to Knowledge through Computer Education

Kishalaya Sishu Siksha Niketan, an educational initiative of Sabuj Sangha has been acting to provide educational opportunities among disadvantaged children of Sundarban, since 2000. After spending almost two decades with success we realize that without proper computer knowledge their holistic development will remain unsuccessful and they cannot shine and earn enough in future. There is hardly any school in Nandakumarpur with computer facilities. As we are committed to ensure quality education for children of rural area, we started the computer classes for last four years from standard III to VIII. We find there are few students who are exceptionally very interested in computer classes.

There is a particular schedule for computer class in our school. According to this schedule our computer teacher guides our students of class III to class VIII regularly. There are different contents for every class. Our computer teacher guides them according to their contents. There are total 80 students from standard III to standard VIII who learn computer with great interest. The primary level (III – V) students are now familiar with computer login and log out in proper way, several logos, drawing in MS paint using different logo command, solving the sums. Specially the students of standard V are able to make File And Folder and saving the drawings in their individual folder. The upper primary level students (VI – VIII) are familiar with copy and paste, map searching in internet and Gmail too. The students take both their theory and practical computer classes in the computer lab.

Some students of upper primary level are accustomed with the uses of computer and the students of primary level are very excited to learn it as a new subject. There are sufficient computers in the lab so that each student can learn by rapid practices.

After long practice of theory and practical computer operating, the students are sitting for their first Unit Test to expose their computer knowledge.

Sudipa is a student of standard VIII in our school. She had been studying in this school from standard-I, and after completing standard IV, she took admission to her nearest governmental High School. But again she has returned here this year and has taken readmission to class-VII. She lives at Nandakumarpur, 1km far from our school. She uses to come to school by cycle to attend school. She belongs to a poor family of six members. Her father is the only earning member of her family. In spite of poverty she keeps up her study and proves herself as a good student. Before coming here she had even no idea about Computer. But strangely, after spending only three months in class seven she acquires a good knowledge in Computer. She is now equally very spontaneous in Computer operating. According to our Computer teacher “She is an ingenious girl with an ability to recover herself from her previous mistake.”
