The lack of clean drinking water poses a real health risk for remote villages in Cambodia. With a water tank at school, the rainwater runoff from rooftop gutters gets collected in the rainy season and stored for the use during the dry season. Students, teachers, and other community members can use the water for drinking or their personal hygiene.
Cambodia has very little ground water and other water resources. The scarcity of water is magnified and can become dangerous during the dry season. Many schools that we supported do not have proper access to clean water. 40% of primary schools and 35% of health centers do not have safe drinking water facilities, and 6.3 million Cambodians do not have access to clean water and basic sanitation. As a result, over 10,000 Cambodian children die each year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water.
To build a large water tank to catch and store rain water during the rainy season. The collected rain water is clean and will be used for drinking as well as for sanitation purposes. This ensures that the school and community has access to clean and safe water for consumption and sanitation all year round.
Proper instruction and training on the maintenance of the water tank will also increase health awareness and sanitation standards in the school and community.
