Three months ago, the Clean Water, Bright Futures for 113 Children Project was initiated at Mafabi Bright Stars Christian School under Mafabi Apostolic Ministries International. The project aimed providing a reliable source of safe drinking water to 113 vulnerable children mostly from single-mother households who previously faced severe health and learning challenges due to unsafe water. The vision has been to improve the children’s health, attendance, and educational outcomes through access to clean water and hygiene education.
Through the generous support of donors, the project raised its initial $1 contribution, which was used to purchase chlorine tablets to treat drinking water. This enabled all 113 children to access safe water for at least a day, demonstrating the life-changing potential of even small contributions.
Beyond water treatment, the project team has conducted community awareness sessions on hygiene practices such as handwashing and protecting water sources from contamination. A local community water committee has also been formed to sustain these gains by ensuring continued water safety and community involvement.
Despite progress, the school still faces significant challenges as it relies on an inconsistent and contaminated water source. Many children continue to experience water-borne illnesses, which affect attendance and performance. Moving forward, the project aims to install a sustainable clean water system at Mafabi Bright Stars Christian School. This intervention will ensure year-round access to safe water, promote hygiene and sanitation education, reduce absenteeism especially among girls and enable every child to learn and thrive in a healthy, dignified environment.
