Summary

Cape Town possesses true beauty, yet apartheid's scars linger. Especially for youths, 13-25, who represent 34% of the population. Separated by diverse cultures, religions, socio and economic standings, they also face many similar issues like COVID's mental health crises of anxiety, depression, and sobriety. Breaking Walls creates unified, empathetic, hopeful youth communities through its Community-Based Initiative. Here young artists from unique cultures partake in a collective Arts experience.

Challenge

Although they are a large percentage of Cape Town's population, young people often encounter what sociologists call "voice poverty". The denial of access to advocacy due to a lack of attention. The 2020 World Youth Report reports because they are left out of traditional political platforms, youths seek alternative ways to express their views to promote change. Youths are in need of an inclusive community that uplifts their creative potential, guides them to be the empathetic leaders of tomorrow.

Solution

The 2023 Cape Town Initiative is collaborating with 30 young artists from Rainbow Dreams Trust, Ocean View High School, and Waldorf School. The young people, representing the Black, White, and Colored populations, will collectively share Breaking Walls Community-Building, Pen-to-Page, and On-Stage nurturing structure. By creating art together, the artists will boldly learn much about themselves and the other youth cultures, enabling them to see they are not alone and to leave prejudices behind.

Long-Term Impact

Breaking Walls offers the unique opportunity to be a part of a global community nurturing creative skills to shape empathetic leaders. Initiative artists continue to connect with each other, and the global community at Monthly Virtual Meetings and annual International Summits. Over 4,500 youths internationally have been impacted by Breaking Walls. To date, 85% assume leadership roles within their communities; 80% select a college major and/or career based on their Breaking Walls experiences.
