Potential risks of generative AI and other new technologies and the impact on traditional journalism

By Carole Kamahoro | Project Leader

Journalism, like other professions requires constant revolution and adaptation to new technologies. Every day there are new tools and techniques being developed in order to keep the profession up to date in the modern era. Journalists are always finding ways to improve their craft as a way to stay relevant in pursuit of these innovations. That is part of what we are doing at Uganda Radio Network in order to uphold professionalism and authenticity.

At Uganda Radio Network, our journalists are being equipped with ways to challenge and fight AI powered disinformation and misinformation. Doctoring, misappropriating, manipulating images, videos and data in general is proving a headache to our team of editors who are determined to provide guidance in upholding traditional journalistic practices. Apps like Chat GPT hindering creativity. Human touch to news gathering and production processes is in constant collision with AI. But AI cannot interact with or interview sources. Critical analysis, empathy and interactive engagement are all aspects of journalism that are simply not possible with generative AI.

The GlobalGiving donations are enabling us to face these challenges and keeping our journalists equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to do their jobs daily. Real journalism requires money to conduct trainings, make calls, go to interview sources, pay for internet, pay salaries and invest in new ways to uphold authentic practices. Without the contribution of our donors, our jobs would be a lot harder.
