Journalists are constantly being confronted with what the audience perceive to be fast news for the 21st century consumer. That can be a three-minute bulletin on the radio or a 280-character post on a social media platform. Some of those platforms generally relay “news” for free or at a limited cost mostly in form of data. That makes it appealing but does not necessarily make it reliable.
Uganda Radio Network and Our team of reporters and journalists deal with these challenges daily, to ensure that the radio audience gets the news that is reliable, factual and on time, but also get it at a subsidized cost. Our news teams daily report on issues without cutting corners in news gathering and sourcing.
Many online news platforms are being challenged to fact-check their stories and look beyond advertising and attracting revenue at the cost of giving audience usable news. The news consumer can get trusted news and the news sites can remain relevant while adhering to professional ethics that deal with issues such as plagiarism and fact checking.
Gathering news the traditional way, still comes at a high cost. It requires boots on the ground, face to face interviews and phone calls to multiple sources for triangulation. Unfortunately the sources of funding for this critical work is getting less and less accessible. This is why the vital services of GlobalGiving remain essential.
Social media is a good tool and can be used for the benefit of advancing a more informed society. That calls for all actors to stay engaged and interested in information that benefits everyone.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
