Our new media officer, Sabrina, recently visited the textile workspace to talk to the ten girls ranging in age from 11 to 18 attending Higor’s class on fashion and textiles. They were making various items of their choice, including tops and trousers, bags, hair accessories and Halloween costumes for a Halloween party organised by ACER’s youth council. Since joining the group, the teenagers’ ideas about fashion have changed. Fashion has become accessible for them and they love the creativity of making and adjusting clothes for themselves, their friends and families. This is what two of the students told her:
‘The sewing classes have changed my life, because, as well as getting to know the world of fashion, I am learning how to use the tools - they are sharing a lot of knowledge here. I can express my creativity, create unique pieces, regardless of style or fabric, create pieces that don't exist, that come out of my imagination, and now I can see the possibility of following it as a career, it's a very interesting area and it has changed my view of fashion, and it's also not something that has an age, or an exclusive gender, it's for everyone who wants it. I had already done a theoretical sewing course, then I saw that Eldorado Textiles was here at ACER Brasil and now I have the opportunity to put everything into practice.’ (Adrielly, 18 years old)
‘I've been taking the classes since the beginning of the year, but I've been coming here since I was little, because my mum, Aline, has been taking embroidery classes here for a few years. The part I like best is that I can make my own clothes instead of buying them, and I also like making costumes for myself and my friends. Ever since I was little I've loved fashion, and I fell in love with it when I watched the film Cruella. She makes lots of beautiful clothes, and as I've always loved designing clothes, I decided to start taking the classes to develop and put them into practice. After I started the classes I was able to adjust my own clothes, I also fix the clothes of my friends, my school mates and my family.’ (Mariana, 14 years old)
Thank you for giving ACER’s young people a chance to engage in something they love and which will open up new opportunities for them.
