Summary

The Reception Centre (RC) and Drop-In Centre (DIC) provide emergency and immediate care to child victims of unsafe migration, trafficking, or abuse. At both sites, children receive a safe space to live, education, meals, and medical care. For children living in extremely unsafe conditions, the RC provides short and long-term care while social workers attempt to locate safe options for family or kinship-based care. These sites are often children's only option for relief from abuse or trauma.

Challenge

10% of the people forcibly returned to Cambodia from Thailand are children. Unfortunately, many of them are victims of unsafe migration or trafficking and arrive back into the country unaccompanied. Because of their age and the length of time they have spent abroad, many do not know their family surname, where they are from, and sometimes do not speak the local language. This makes community reintegration difficult. Without intervention, these children are at high-risk of further exploitation.

Solution

Offering children a safe space to recover from the trauma they've endured significantly reduces the risk that they will be exposed to further exploitation. While we assess their long term options, the Reception Centre provides children with a safe space to stay, three nutritious meals a day, education, counselling, and activities. Our approach encourages creativity and expression. Art, sports, music, and dance are some of the activities we use to help children heal from their past trauma.

Long-Term Impact

Our program is designed to give children the support they need to succeed from the time they are first brought into our care until the time we can assist them with acquiring gainful employment. Our caseworkers assess each child's circumstances to determine the best course of action to ensure they receive the most benefit from our services. The Reception Centre provides early intervention and immediate support, which are crucial in breaking the cycle of trafficking and exploitation.
