We will bring a group of 12 activists from the U.S., South Asia, Pacific to Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki for one week in late April to engage in dialogues with survivors, academic experts, political leaders, Japanese university students, and international activists about nuclear disarmament. Students will gain practical advocacy skills on advocating for a world free of nuclear weapons and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
In May, leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) will convene in Hiroshima for their annual summit. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida chose Hiroshima, deciding it was the most relevant location to discuss international peace and nuclear disarmament, especially since most leaders have never visited the historic city. In light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, concerns about nuclear weapon usage have strongly resurged.
Our project will raise awareness about the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons. Specifically, we will contribute to the international youth statement on nuclear disarmament with other youth leaders at the ICAN Youth Summit. We will also conduct a series of instagram lives, convene public dialogues with the survivors of the atomic bombings, engage in a creative arts workshop for youth to express themselves on nuclear disarmament, and participate in a press conference throughout Japan.
As a long-term impact, our youth will be encouraged to meet with parliamentarians, ministries of defense and foreign affairs, possibly hold a public event at a university, and share their stories to local and international press in order to shift the public discourse on nuclear weapons and influence G7 leaders to support progressive nuclear disarmament measures. Ultimately, advocacy, activism, and accountability will help to reverse the trend.
