Supporting people through this bursary has changed lives. Kate was agressive and reluctant to take part in class and had been excluded from two mainstream schools. She was placed at one of our Youth Achievement Foundations where a passion for sport was quickly identified as a way of engaging her to learn. Kate was given more support than she'd had at school and soon began to trust the staff. Her aggression was channelled into boxing where her talent saw her become a national champion. Alongside this, Kate gained accredited awards starting with a Youth Achievement Award. This built her confidence and meant she quickly moved on to find a job and complete further qualifications including an NVQ. The Youth Achievement Award was the first stepping stone on her journey to a full and successful life.

Accredited Learning Bursary Update

Our bursary for accreditation has so far raised $200 through Global Giving:
- $25 Funding for Nia to receive a Youth Achievement Awards pack and certificate when they complete it. Giving them the first step back into education.
- $80 Funds Bliaze through a Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum level Youth Achievement Award. Filling their CV & building a whole range of skills that will be relevant to help them move into work.
- $125 Supports Jack to attend a Youth Achievement Foundation for 1 day. These Foundations provide accessible and supportive learning to stop young people losing out on education.
- $160 Trains one Claire to support young people through a Youth Achievement Award enhancing their skills and enabling them to support many young people to learn.
- $250 Funds 10 young people to take their first Youth Achievement Award at Bronze level. Helping them make their first step back into education, building their confidence and their practical skills.
- $400 Will support Rob to take a residential break filled with non-formal learning opportunities. This bursary supports disadvantaged or challenged young people to take a life changing break.
The money recieved so far has been supporting highly vulnerable learners at our Youth Achievement Foundations. These centres offer supportive small group learning to re-engage with formal education often following exclusion from mainstream schooling. When we compare local data on transitions of students out of the NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) category, YAFs are successful in helping to engage and retain students in education. For non-YAF students the most popular destinations out of NEET are employment (45% in December 2010) and government supported training (34%). For YAF students most known destinations are into further education (85.2%) proving they have successfully re-engaged with learning through our accredited programmes. Our Youth Achievement Foundations can educate and re-engage a vulnerable young person from as little as £4,000 per year.
