Dear Friends,
We are thrilled to tell you about a new and exciting project we have going on here at The Mariposa Center for Girls. Thanks to a group of volunteers from Lawrence Academy in Groton Massachusetts, this summer, we will be providing a fun and unique opportunity for our girls to develop some real business skills. Working together with our girls, the volunteers from Lawrence Academy helped to build a small "snack shack" in front of our center, right on the main road.
The Snack Shack will be a fully operating business, completely run by the Mariposa girls themseleves! Scheduled to open in July, the girls will be selling fresh juices, smoothies, sandwiches and snacks. Many of the ingredients will come right from our very own permaculture garden where several Mariposas are learning all about how to grow their own food. This exciting project provides an opportunity for our vocational students to work together in a real life setting. This unique opportunity will help girls develop business skills including inventory management, basic accounting, customer service, teamwork and leadership. Those who are interested in developing their culinary skills will also have the chance to try recipes and create the menu.
In addition, we are excited to update you on one of our sewing students. Rosa Lourdes has been training under our sewing teacher for the past few years and has turned into quite a skilled seamstress. Now that she has graduated high school, Rosa Lourdes will begin as a part-time employee here at The Mariposa Center for Girls, teaching other girls to sew! "If it wasn't for Mariposa, I would have never learned how to sew and I am not sure what I would have done for a job. There are not many jobs here in our town but I can make things and always be able to make money for myself!" says Rosa Lourdes.
All of these exciting developments are only possible because of thoughtful, generous people like you and we thank you for your ongoing support.
With gratitude,
The girls, families, volunteers and staff at The Mariposa DR Foundation
