To survive in Darfur, you have to have a successful harvest. The rain didn't come early this year, it is too late for the planting of millet, the staple crop, which needs three months growing time to produce a harvest. This means farmers must have sorghum seeds, but few have. We urgently need to provide seeds for the hardest hit villages in the north of Darfur. We have already funded 262 of the poorest families (thank you) but now hundreds more families in 65 of our villages need your help.
The rains have come too late and have shortened the growing season. This will have a devastating effect on next year's crop. Families already know that they face starvation. There are a further 65 Kids for Kids villages where we are determined families will not risk facing 2015 without sufficient food to feed their families. The millet is used to make assida - a grey blancmange type dish, unpalatable unless you add to it, this is why our goats are vital for milk to add nutrients & texture.
We were thrilled to be able to fund seed for 262 families so quickly with supporters help. We are now aiming to be able to deliver seed in the next few weeks for 3 villages at a time. If we do this together and the seed is planted we will know that each family receiving 3kgs of sorghum has the basics to survive - just. With the addition of our other sustainable projects, including goats, donkeys, health care and farming, children might just stand a chance.
"There is no malnutrition in Azargarfa" - Adam Sebil village leader, April 2013. Azargarfa was adopted in 2004. More families have received goats from our Loans as they have been rotated from family to family every 2 years. The little flocks have transformed their lives. Our health care for both humans and animals has transformed lives. Children have fresh water to drink, food to eat, and the whole community has been transformed. People are moving their because they stand a better chance.
