We did it...

By Shayle Havemann | Project leader

Dear Supporters,

Since COVID-19 raced through Ghana it became clear that our local school and community had a serious lack of emergency first aid skills. This project has now successfully finished and with your donations we were able to train 18 teachers and 4 community police officers as well as provide advanced first aid kits.

We selected 4 teachers from the 4 community schools to ensure that there will always be 3 first aiders on duty at any one time and the chief police officer told us that the police do get first aid training as part of their training but it is very limited and therefore we selected 4 community officers to ensure 1 is alway on duty and advanced trained.

The feedback has been very positive and, amazingly, one of the teachers has already had to use their new skills: they passed an elderly gentleman having heart and breathing difficulties in the village recently and stopped to provide assistance, assessing the problem, providing care and getting the gentleman safely into hospital. Amazing coincidence that that particular teacher had just finished the training the previous day! Very rewarding.

After having spent, now, so much more time talking to the teachers about their experience trying to treat ill or injured students in the past we found that none of the schools has a first aid kit and with the pandemic and the strain it has placed on people financially we decided to provide comprehensive first aid kits across 4 schools (including things like eye protectors, masks, mouth-to-mouth shields, and so on).

Thank you for your support and don’t forget you can continue to help our community through our main project campaign for Ghana.

Thanks,
