Our Tutoring Program that starts in August 2016 will help girls in grade 7 & 8 in Bankondji during the new school year 2016-2017 develop the ability to comprehend texts in reading comprehension, math and other subjects and pass the complex high school entrance exam required to enroll in Cameroonian high schools.
Many 7th and 8th graders in rural communities in Cameroon cannot understand grade-level texts in reading comprehension, math and other subjects. Time is for the essence and girls cannot continue to fail because success throughout the high school year is crucial if they wish to pursue their studies. Also Aumazo school success potential will depend greatly on the way these girls thrive in school.
We plan to tutor girls up to grade-level in their classroom setting by using the Peer-to Peer Tutoring Method. During the training, tutors trained by an Aumazo volunteer expert educator, provide expertise, experience and encouragement. They do not give answers, instead, they assist students in problem-solving, and getting answers through questioning. Tutors are not trying to change the students but are helping them improve their skills.
The Tutoring Program will provide 80 Aumazo prospective students, a unique educational reinforcement opportunity. Girls, ages 12 to 20 will participate in this program tailored to prepare them during the school year 2016-2017 to pass the high school entrance exam required in Cameroon to enter high school. These girls will stay engaged and achieve success rapidly. Hence, we anticipate at least 80% success rate in the exam as opposed to the current 17%.
