We are supporting 500 school girls with low cost reusable pads, girls aged 10-19 years from low income families in Mpigi-Uganda face a myriad of Menstrual Hygiene Management challenges, including: lack of information, products and services, the use of unhygienic materials such as cow dung, dry sand, leaves, sisal fibers, pieces of mattress and blankets to manage their menses. They trade sex for pads with men, twice their age, exposing them to early pregnancies, abortions, HIV/AIDS and STIs
There is limited availability of feminine hygiene products like disposable pads, tampons and other products among school-going girls. Even then, these products are usually too expensive for most Ugandan families, especially from rural areas, to afford. Desperate to stop the monthly flow, girls most often resort to using pieces of cloth, shreds of foam mattresses, toilet paper, newspapers, banana plant fibers and even leaves. These options ineffective, uncomfortable, unhygienic, putting girls at risk
This project will distribute reusable sanitary napkins to 500 school going girls aged 10-19 all year round to enable them continue and complete Primary and secondary school education
Menstrual hygiene Education, provision of pain relief and adequate sanitary facilities at school would improve the schooling experience of rural school going girls in Uganda
