The antelopes around DAKTARI are all relatively used to people and some of them have been hand raised by our volunteers! Chancy and Nyalou came to DAKTARI in late 2015 and have grown up with us since, whereas Maxi came a few years ago, and has now brought into camp all her offspring since then. We have quite a family! By sponsoring the whole group, you help us provide them with a clean and safe feeding area and all of their food.
Maxi is an orphan bushbuck that had been hand raised by DAKTARI. She became so much a part of the Daktari family that we can't imagine living without her. She has been at DAKTARI since 2008 where she roams free. She has also brought her babies to DAKTARI as well. In the local villages bushbucks are usually poached for their meat. Chancy and Nyalou are newer additions to DAKTARI and are being raised by our staff.
We provide all of our antelope with food and care. Bushbucks are solitary animals except when accompanied by their young and are mainly active at dawn and dusk. Although the antelope are free to roam a round, they still depend on our help. We provide them with food that includes: birdseeds, game pellets, fruits, vegetables that we have to buy regularly. Having the antelope around DAKTARI also provides us with an opportunity to educate the children about them and how to protect them.
Having our beloved antelopes around definitely creates a great impact and compassion on the local children. We get to teach the children about these different kinds of animals and why they are important to protect.
