Spay/neuter is the only safe, humane and most impactful solution for controlling the overpopulation of stray animals. Every town and city in Romania has stray dogs and cats which have been multiplying uncontrollably over the last 25 years due to an inefficient animal control program, burdened by corruption and a lack of education and trained vets. Also, because they can't afford to feed more than one or two at the time, pet owners abandon the litters on the streets, in parking lots or dumpsters
Despite the law, unwantted litters are dumped on the streets of Romania every day. Stray animals, are mostly ignored but also abused, chased away or killed when perceived as a safety threat. In Romania stray dogs and cats very rarely benefit from being placed in humane shelters or adopted. Instead, local corrupt authorities hire rogue dog collectors to take them off the streets and get rid of them by leaving them to starve in dirty shelters or killing them on the spot if the shelters are full.
This project will pay for a team of 8 trained vets and technicians to travel 400 km from Bucharest to Macin to say/neuter 250 animals in 8 days.
The long term impact means that are that no more puppies or kittens will be born to suffer on the streets of Macin. According to Dogs on Death Row and PETA, each unspayed female dog and her offspring can potentially produce up to 67,000 puppies in her seven-year lifespan. Surgically sterilizing the animals means they won't be able to reproduce and that no more unwanted puppies or kittens will be born to endure a cruel life on the streets.
