Since 2013, the Vocational Training Center has provided training for more than 2,000 youth and women in the area. Training facilities were built in 2016 which means more and more students are now able to follow the 3-month courses.
The year 2018 started off pretty shaky for the YUM Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Central Kalimantan. Having lost its major donor, funding was essential in order to continue providing skills to the disadvantaged youth in the 7 villages where YUM works. Working with a population where 40% of its inhabitants live in poverty and nearly 90% of the respondents live on less than US$ 200 a month, it is impossible for the VTC to offer paid courses to its participants.
GlobalGiving seemed one of the best ways for YUM to reach out to as many people as possible. Thanks to your donations, as well as other donors from other organisations, the VTC was able to continue its work up until today!
141 youth and women were able to receive the following trainings:
They also received Job Seeking Skills, Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurial Skills workshops, which are 3-day workshops.
21-year old Wayan, who followed the Computer courses was very happy after completing the 3-month course because with his certificate in hand, he was able to find a job working in an office. Wayan was previously working as a gardener and had always dreamed of a more stable job with a better income. In his words: "Coming from being a gardener and finally being accepted in an office is so meaningful and an amazing achievement for me!"
The 1st term of the VTC has now ended and a graduation ceremony took place this month. To see more photos of the graduation ceremony and to keep being updated about the Kalimantan VTC, head to our Facebook page dedicated to the VTC.
We can't thank you enough for your trust in our organisation and hope that one day you can visit the project yourself and see the impact it has on the participants.
Best,
The YUM Team
