This project is establishing a community-owned piggery farm and breeding facility in rural communities in Central Uganda, to empower 100 community members to engage in commercial pig farming. The project will provide training, breeding services, and market access, aiming to increase income and food security for participating households
The pork market in Uganda is growing, with Kampala being a major consumption hub. However, small-scale farmers face challenges in accessing quality breeding stock, markets, and technical support. Uganda's pork market demand is estimated at 1.2 million pigs per year, with Kampala consuming over 40% of the country's pork products. Pork accounts for 15% of the total meat consumed in Kampala, with an average annual growth rate of 5%.
We will establish a modern piggery farm with 50 sows, featuring automated facilities and state-of-the-art sty construction that eliminates odors and ensures a clean environment. The farm will provide piglets to community members, who will receive training and support. We will also provide feeds for the first three months to help them establish their farms.
The project will increase income for community members, improve food security, and empower them to become self-sufficient. Community members will develop skills and confidence in pig farming, enabling them to sustainably engage in the industry.
