This week, 40 sixth grade students at the Buhumba primary school will break ground on their sustainable garden project adjacent to the site reserved for their planned new school. Under the supervision of a local agronomy expert and the director of their school, they will learn and employ the proper techniques that are needed to prepare the local soil, and plant the crops (including corn, tomatoes, beans, and leeks), as well as water, weed and care for their growth. When the crops mature, these children will harvest them and also take them to market. Their gardening tools and supplies will be housed in a new stable and secure garden shed, also on the property. Each Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, the students will spend two hours receiving hands-on training in the practical skills for sustainable agriculture. Through this project, the students will learn valuable skills in farming, production and supplying that will empower them to start their own farms and businesses.
