School furniture for Bigyan after the earthquakes

A microproject by International Disaster Volunteers (IDV)
School furniture for Bigyan after the earthquakes

Summary

Bigyan is 14 and he's a survivor of two Nepal earthquakes. Bigyan lives with his family in Sindhupalchok district. Bigyan's school was badly damaged in the first earthquake, and Bigyan's school desk and bench were destroyed by the falling rubble. This means Bigyan has to sit on the floor during class and struggles to write down his lessons. This threatens Bigyan's future by denying him a quality education. But with your help, we'll provide Bigyan and thirty nine other kids with a desk and bench.

Challenge

In 2015 Nepal was devastated by two earthquakes in less than three weeks. Over 36,000 classrooms were destroyed or heavily damaged and more than 1 million children, including Bigyan, are now learning in terrible conditions, often sitting on the floor. This is causing further harm to Bigyan by denying him a quality education. This threatens his future, and Bigyan risks becoming trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Solution

Your donations will be used to provide school furniture for Bigyan and thirty nine of his classmates at the Shree Bal Shiksha Secondary School in Sindhupalchok. Specifically this project will provide ten sets of desks and benches, each of which can seat four children. This school furniture will allow Bigyan and his classmates to receive an effective education, and learn the skills they need to build brighter futures, and escape poverty for good.

Long-Term Impact

Your donations will give Bigyan and his classmates back their education and help them escape poverty when they're older. Bigyan's school is about three hours from Kathmandu, and its more rural location means that kids like Bigyan are poorer, and more neglected, than those in the capital. By allowing us to provide school furniture for them, you'll ensure these kids not only recover from the earthquakes, but also build stronger futures in the long-term.
