Summary

Camp Dryland Solutions, a Somali community-led non-profit, will establish a 171 hectare model farm & education center to enhance food-security for 2,500 local farmers and their families. In this country, being ravaged by drought, the project will: 1. Enhance food security by creating food forests & improving food production methods 2. Mitigate the effects of climate change & extreme droughts by improving water management & grazing techniques 3. Provide regenerative farming training

Challenge

Climate change may prove to be the biggest threat ever faced by Somalia - the cost of water and food are rising significantly after months of drought. Farmers and herders are losing their primary income sources as livestock die and harvests fail. The problems are compounded by a severely degraded landscape where resources have become scarce after centuries of overgrazing and deforestation. As rural life becomes unsustainable, people are leaving their homes to find shelter in displacement camps.

Solution

The key to rebuilding a healthy and vibrant Somalia lies in restoring its natural resources. This is the core mission of Camp Dryland Solutions: proving that thriving on the land is possible by reversing the cycle of natural resources' degradation. Farmers and herders will learn how to improve livelihoods and enhance food security while regreening the landscape and ultimately creating abundance for their communities and for all animal and plant life. Let's bring Somalia back to abundance!

Long-Term Impact

1 year: Drought-resilient crops & grasses are planted, improving food security; pastures, soil health swales & check dams are built, capturing rainwater. 5 years: Water infiltration is improved, replenishing the water table; a tree nursery is established to plant over 500,000 trees. 10 years: Hundreds of food forests are established locally; a green landscape with abundant resources is created. For all generations to come: Natural resources are restored & people thrive on their native land!
